This is awesome! Honestly I wasn’t there, but I do understand that sets and scheduling can be stressful. This was when a Director of Photography walked into a scene, and ruining it.
Whether Bale was in the right for snapping, or not, I just love this audio clip.

I have a mixed opinion on it. Yeah, sure he’s stressed, but at the same time it was an accident. On the other hand, apparently it wasn’t the first time the dude got in the middle of the set, so, in a way, he is right. The only question is, did he get a little too worked up over it? lol.

ok… so this one time… I was recording in my studio… put a BIG sign on the door that said “recording in process, DO NOT KNOCK, DO NOT RING DOORBELL”
low and behold, when the fed-ex guy came… what do you think he did?
I didn’t yell as long as christian did, but i did yell at him… it was my 20-something take of this one track and i thought i finally had it when the doorbell rang…

I think that the guy was wrong but there comes a degree of professionalism required and it is clear that CB doesn’t have it. The DP of a major Hollywood blockbuster should know far better than to waltz around in front of the camera during a take. And he sure as hell should know better than to do it repeatedly.

The DP should have checked his damn lights BEFORE they started shooting the scene. And he doesn’t do it just once…but TWICE? Clearly Mr.Bale got to him before the director did. I probably would have flipped out too, the man was wasting time, and not to mention a lot of money (depending on how they were shooting it) needing to do another take.
I can only imagine the body language the DP was giving off to have him go on for five minutes! I’m with Bale on this one, that DP was a complete moron, and probably wasted a good few thousand dollars and the crews time needing to shoot the scene again (which probably would have been perfect if Bale were allowed to do his job and not be interrupted by an unprofessional DP)

I imagine the only way to get Christian Bale that pissed was if he was having a horrible day, it was one of the key scenes and he was working his arse off doing it, then near the end of the scene the Director of Photography walks in behind him to try to fix the lighting. Bale takes it somewhat lightly the first time but then the second time he goes berserk.

Aw, Bale. I’m a die hard lifelong Bale fan (only complaint about him at all is that he phoned it in for the Dark Knight. Sad), so I was sort of cringe-laughing-wide-eyed throughout the audio.

Yes, it would be unbelievably stressful to work long hours to complete a movie. However, a ‘cultured’ actor like Bale should focus on the people who are actually working to make this movie what it is, and who are not acting. I think the Photography Director had previous screw-ups, yes, but Bale should have handled it more maturely. Celebs are never alone.

Everyone was wrong. When you are on set, if you are part of the crew, as soon as that camera is rolling, you are still as the dead and out of the actors’ sights. Doesn’t matter who you are unless you are the director. You hold your equipment, check your levels, watch your lights all with a straight face and as little movement as possible.
According to this, the guy moved twice, and we don’t know if Bale called him out on it the first time or if the guy didn’t know he was why Bale stopped the first time.
Bale is wrong. He wasted an immense amount of time screaming something he could have clarified firmly in one or two sentences, all while bitching about how unprofessional the other guy was being. There’s nothing more unprofessional than pitching a fit, no matter who the fuck you are, actor or even director. Bale was out f line, and it clearly shows, coupled with his behavior several days later with his family that he has severe anger management issues.

So as the DP the man should have done his job before the take even started. This wasn’t his first time walking into the take, ruining yet another take that could have probably helped them move on in the movie. It’s not that he can’t concentrate, it’s hard to act, try it. It’s not as easy as everyone seems to think it is, because if that were the case then we wouldn’t pay people thousands of dollars to act. You’re not in the industry so don’t make stupid comments you don’t know about. Sure Bale could have cursed less but if it was a long scene, long day, and had been doing this scene for a while and you think you just might have finished it then this dumbass comes and ruins it, you’d probably react the same way.
FYI the media does not suck the actors “cocks left and right” if you ever do pick up a magazine you’ll notice that the media like to belittle the hell out of actors from saying “they gained weight” to how poorly they did something.
Sure there are other who do more for society but most tend to do it because it’s what they believe is correct, not because they want the publicity. If they are doing it for publicity then they are douche’s because they should help out not because they’ll get recognized but because that is what they feel is right. The media exists to ruin others.
I’m on Bale’s side I’ve been in small theater productions when someone walks in on your skit, it sucks and gets one irritated. Bale does this for a living, it would make sense why he blew up.

Haha.. I just find it truly hilarious. There have been times where i’ve “snapped” at co-workers merely because they were being douchebags. And i’m sure he feels bad about it now not only because it’s damaged his image, but because he really did embarass and hurt the guys feelings. (atleast, thats how I felt afterward). People have anger issues! And yes movie sets are stressful and each take costs money (lots of it), maybe this was Bale’s way of saving the movie company money in this dire financial situation we’re all in as a country. (Or maybe he had to drop a deuce and he wasn’t allowed to leave the set til that scene was complete) Thank god he didn’t run at him guns blazin! If he had harmed his family he should have done more than threatened the dude, he should have harmed him back.
The point is that he can’t be a great actor if someone is ruining the shot. They may have just lost a great (possible) scene and as he said, it happened before this. These scenes are worth thousands of dollars of set time.
No matter the situation, to say he has done wrong, or done right, is going too far for us. We don’t know the full situation.
Personally though, with the current info and filling in the gaps, I think it’s pretty plain that he acted reasonably.

An audio clip like this makes it really easy for Christian Bale to look like the bad guy because he’s the only one we can hear speaking and thus we only hear his offenses being said. However, I think the reality is that if a person is yelling at a person for nearly 5 straight minutes it stands to reason that there was more of a dialogue continuing BETWEEN the two. Perhaps the director of photography was provoking Bale with argumentativeness of his own.
Regardless, I’m sure it must be extremely frustrating when you’re trying to make a huge budget action movie working for 12+ hours a day with intense physical and mental stress and someone screws up an important scene. Even when I was in college producing our little film productions it could be really infuriating when someone screws up a part of the production due to simple thoughtlessness. When you put a lot of yourself into something you expect other people to have the same respect for it.

Hollywood is an intense place to work. There one mistake and you are out. It is high stress on set with thousands of dollars being spent per minute with a large crew of union employees standing around waiting for things to happen. Evidently, Bale said it was the second time. The key word used is unprofessional–the DP was being a liability. Is it right or a better term, effective for Bale to go ballistic? I doubt the DP will ever make that mistake again, but unfortunately it took losing his job to learn it. Bale will have everyone walking on eggshells so they don’t set off another F’n blitz. Sounds pretty effective to me. Nice? No.

Wow that was a long rant! It is true that some actors, especially method actors like Christian Bale, need all their surroundings to be absolutely perfect when they are acting, otherwise it messes up their concentration. It involves bringing up a lot of memories of situations in the past, knowing how to position your body, living the role (and all while trying to remember your lines). Method acting is tough, and when you’re in full flow, getting interrupted can be kind of annoying.
Although I still feel sorry for the ‘lights’ man cos he sounded really humble and apologetic. I mean, Christian Bale even said he’s a nice guy.

The last time I was in a Cinema to watch a movie, I saw a T4-Trailer. That just reminded me of this…
Shed is right: it doesn’t matter what the guy did, no one deserves to be chewed out like that. Bale totally lost it and can’t understand the guy. The key word is PATIENCE with the people.
I also lost most of my respect for him. But sadly, most actors are great on stage, but in real life they’re pricks

Some of the greatest artists are mmmm… psychos. But that tape has a class of its on. Very educational. I had no idea that Bale was such a diva! I feel sorry for the guys working with him.

You’d think he was the director, the way he went on in the clip. I look forward to this getting into all the blooper shows over the next few years – such uncontrolled tantrums really do need to be shown up for their ‘man behaves like child’ comedy content.

What an A-Hole. The DP is at the top of the Hierarchy with the Director, and hes in charge of the camera and crews. Actors are not in charge, they are just paid to do a job, no matter how many takes are needed.
Sure, he probably shouldn’t have been moving around and making adjustments while a scene was being shot, and I don’t even understand why he would need to check the lighting unless maybe it was a quick rehearsal…but that was uncalled for in Bale’s part. As a film student and future DP/Director I have lost some respect for him.
However, Without knowing the exact circumstances and other possible events that could have led to this outburst I cannot make a 100% accurate interpretation.
